Tariffs and Your Branded Apparel and Swag Budget

by | Industry News

President Trump has stated that his administration will impose significant tariffs on U.S. imports from China, Canada, and Mexico, which is feared to lead to price increases across the board, including branded apparel and swag.

The good news is our industry’s manufacturers and importers are a step ahead and have been looking for ways to minimize the impact.

This is not the first time our industry has encountered political and economic situations affecting the supply chain. There are certain things we can do to prepare for the effect of tariffs on our marketing budgets.

How Will The Tariffs Affect You As a Buyer

Although we don’t know for sure what goods will be affected and how much, we can prepare for the following potential consequences:

Higher Costs for Branded Swag and Apparel Coming From Affected Countries

If your go-to promotional items—such as branded T-shirts, custom bags, or tech giveaways—come from China or Mexico, there’s a chance prices could climb. If tariffs are imposed, the costs of raw materials and manufacturing will likely rise, increasing costs and, therefore, sales prices.

For instance, items such as China-made embroidered jackets or custom USB drives may get a little pricier. While this can stretch company apparel and swag budgets, knowing the “why” behind these changes can help you adjust your plans accordingly.

Fewer Choices in the Short-Term

Some manufacturers might trim down their product lines while things unfold. This is a way to simplify production and keep costs manageable. For example, they might cut back on highly customizable features or premium eco-friendly materials. This means there could be fewer options for you.

While this might sound limiting, it’s all part of an effort to keep pricing competitive and products accessible for you.

Longer Lead Times for Custom Orders

Custom-made promotional products, which often require more elaborate designs and proofing processes, could face longer production or delivery times as supply chains adjust.

If you’ve got a big campaign or HR gifting plan in the works, give yourself some extra time to find the best suitable products and ensure everything arrives when you need it.

While there will likely be a disruption, we and our manufacturers are always finding creative ways to innovate to overcome these challenges.

What We Are Doing As Providers To Help Our Customers.

Trump’s proposed tariffs might feel like a big shift, but there are practical ways to stay ahead and keep your promotional strategies running smoothly, and that’s what we are working on.

Here’s our list of suggestions:

Switch To Made in The USA Products

There are plenty of domestic manufacturers with excellent production capacity who are long-time partners of ours. Typically a bit higher in price, U.S.-made promotional items support local businesses and often come with stable pricing and faster delivery. Not to mention top quality.

Imports From Alternative Countries

Since issues with imports from China are not new, many manufacturers have switched production to countries with lower or no tariffs or have plans to do so. These offer great alternatives with an increasing number of product offerings.

Collaboration With Manufacturers

We’ve been having open conversations with our sourcing partners about how tariffs might affect their operations – and your orders.

Together, we are exploring ways to manage costs, such as bulk purchasing, locking in prices with long-term contracts, or switching to more cost-effective product options.

Planning Ahead

With potential delays from supply chain adjustments, it’s wise to plan your purchases early. Staying flexible with timelines can also help reduce stress in the long run.
